How do you find inspiration? How do you stay up to date with the current trends, technology and codes?
Both Pinterest and Instagram are great places to find inspiration, along with local trade shows like IDS West. I was recently privileged enough to be able to go to Neocon in Chicago this year, which was an amazing opportunity to see upcoming trends for 2018.
What does a successful project mean to you?
A successful project to me means the client is happy. At the end of the day, they will be the one who either has to sell or live in the space!
You fell in love with design when?
I originally fell in love with the idea of reading floorplans for a living. I was in elementary school reading a book about a mouse’s house. On one of the pages there was a floorplan of the house and I couldn't stop looking at it, thinking about how cool it looked! From there it took off to rearranging furniture in my room, to painting classes and then to really thinking about design school!
As an interior designer, are there any myths that you would like to bust?
I think the biggest myth is that we only pick furniture and paint colours. While that is a part of the job, there is a lot more to it than people think. When someone enters a space, or a development, they probably don't consider that the interior designer has shaped how they walk though the space and how they may feel while in the space.
Who or what are your design influences?
My friends and co-workers are probably my biggest design influences. I love working in a collaborative office where everyone has a different style. I've evolved as a designer because who I've worked with along the way.
What are some things you like to do outside of the office?
I volunteer my time to IDIBC and help plan some of the events that happen throughout the year; something I've been doing since I started my career.
How do you like to spend your weekends?
Trying out and finding new restaurants and local shops are a couple of my favourite ways to enjoy a weekend. I've also always enjoyed painting and drawing. My weekends are my time where I can just sit, relax, and explore with different techniques and mixing mediums. In the fall, I'm looking forward to going on long walks with the dog my boyfriend and I will be getting, Winston a mini golden doodle!
